2eme semaine au M.I. / 2nd week at M.I.

Cette semaine de cours s'est bien passee. Les profs sont vraiment supers et l'ambiance est bonne. J'ai egalement fait la connaissance de Jean-Marc Belkadi, un guitaristequi est prof au M.I et qui est le meilleur ami de mon copain Alain Lasseube. Jean-Marc est etablit a L.A depuis 21 ans maintenant et comme moi a fait ses etudes musicales au Conservatoirede Toulouse.
Les cours sont tous collectifs (sauf 1 qui est prive) et se passent ainsi:
- Lundi:
10h00: le cours s'appelle PERC RSW avec un batteur nomme Andy Magna. Il dure 1h. Ce cours nous apprend comment aborder le travail de studio, ce qui est vraiment tres interressant. Un bassiste et un guitariste assistent Andy. Ce sont 2 musiciens professionnelsqui jouent avec nous. Chaque eleve passe a tour de role pour jouer une chanson et a l'avis personnel d'Andy ainsi que des 2 assistants, ce qui est vraiment bien car chaque musicien peut avoir un feeling totalement different de celui du prof.
14h00: "Reading technique", ou comment lire une partition le plus vite et le plus efficacementpossible! Le prof s'appelle Gary Hess. Le niveau n'est pas reellement ce que j'attendais mais je vais certainement avoir l'autorisation de pouvoir suivre les cours du dernier niveau.
18h00: "Fill Fest"! Ou comment inventer, improviser, ou apprendre des fills de batterie. Chacun peut aussi montrer un fill personnel qu'il affectionne et l'enseigner aux autres. On y parle aussi de technique, c'est interressant.
- Mardi:
10h00: "Playing Technique", avec Mr. Rob Carson. TRES TRES bon cours!!!! C'est LE maitre!Je n'ai jamais vu une technique pareille!!! Epoustouflant!!! Et super pedagogie en plus de ca!Genial!13h00: Lecon privee avec Gary Garbatini. Il a enregistre quelques fois avec LE bassiste A. Laboriel.
17h00: "Working with Loops": ou comment travailler son instrument avec des boucles de son.
- Mercredi:
10h00: De nouveau PERC RSW (voir plus haut). C'est le suivi du cours du lundi.
14h00: De nouveau "Reading technique". C'est egalement le suivi du cours du lundi.
15h00: "Rock Drums"! ou comment jouer dans l'esprit ROCK tout en conservant le groove. Le prof s'appelle Jeff Flowers et sonne rock d'une facon inimaginable. Avec lui, 2 assistants: un guitariste et un bassiste. C'est le meme concept que le cours PERC RSW.
- Jeudi:10h00: De nouveau "Playing Technique", avec Mr. Rob Carson. Rien dans l'apres-midi.
- Vendredi:
11h00: Ensemble "Fusion". Pour resumer: c'est un atelier ou l' on apprend des themes Fusion. Le prof est un tres bon guitariste nomme Jeffrey Richman. Il joue souvent au "Baked Potato", un club tres connu a Los Angeles. Il joue ou a joue sur ses disques et en live avec des grosses pointures comme Ray Barretto, les bassistes Jimmy Haslip (des Yellowjackets) , Abe Laboriel, les pianistes Russell Ferrante, T Lavitz, Peter Wolf, et des batteurs comme Vinny Colaiuta, Steve Smith ou Simon Phillips...
16h00: "Jazz Drums" Le prof est un vieux batteur nomme Chuck Flores. Il a joue entre autre avec Jao Giberto durant la grande periode de la bossa nova, mais aussi avec Charlie Parker et Woody Herman. Meme concept que les cours PERC RSW et Rock Drums: il y a 2 assistants pros avec qui on joue. A tout ca s'ajoutent ce qu'on appelle les LPW. Traduire par "Live Playing Workshops". Ce sont des ateliers. Je vais a celui de Carl Schroeder (piano). La aussi, c'est vraiment bien puisqu'un professeur de chaque instrument assiste l'eleve. Ce qui fait qu'il y a autant de profs que d'eleves a l'atelier.
Et bien sur, entre les cours, je pratique mon instrument dans un local que je partage avec 4 autres etudiants.
Samedi et Dimanche: Relache! Mais l'ecole est ouverte 24h/24h et 7 jours/7. Libre a moi de pratiquer ou non!...

This week in Musicians Institute was nice. Teachers are great and atmosphere too. I also met Jean-Marc Belkadi, a guitar player who is a teacher at M.I. since 1984. Jean-Marc is the best friend of Alain Lasseube, a friend of mine who lives in Toulouse, and Jean-Marc studied also at the Conservatory of Toulouse.
The courses are colectives, except one private lesson:
- Monday:
10:00 a.m: PERC RSW with a drummer called Andy Magna. One hour. It is a class about the Studio situation, what is very interesting. It is probably one of the most important class of the program. A bass player and a guitar player assist Andy. These guys are both professionnals musiciens and play with us. Each student play a song with the band and has the personel advice of Andy and of the 2 assistants,.
2:00 p.m: one hour of "Reading technique", or how to reed a score the faster we can! Gary Hess is the teacher.
6:00 p.m: one hour of "Fill Fest"! or how to invent, improvise, or learn drum's fills. Everybody could also show and teach to the class his own personal fills. We speak also about technic, it is interesting.
- Tuesday:
10:00 a.m: one hour of "Playing Technique", with Mr. Rob Carson. Very good class! It is the master! I had never seen such a wonderful playing technique before!!! And his pedagogy is also great! Hawsome!
1:00 p.m: one hour private lesson with Gary Garbatini. He had recorded few times with the great bass player A. Laboriel.
5:00 p.m: one hour of "Working with Loops": or how to work drums with loops and work on the sound too.
- Wednesday:
10:00 a.m: PERC RSW again (see above). It is the follow-up of the monday's class.
2:00 p.m: "Reading technique" again. It is also the follow-up of the monday's class.
3:00 p.m: "Rock Drums"! or how to play in Rock spirit. The teacher is Jeff Flowers and sounds rock very well. With him, 2 assistants: a guitar player and a bass player. It is the same concept than the PERC RSW's class.
- Thursday:
10:00 a.m: "Playing Technique" again, with Mr. Rob Carson. It is the follow-up of the tuesday's class. No class in the afternoon, so I can practice more on the drumset in my lab.
- Friday:
11:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m : "Fusion Ensemble". It is a workshop where we play fusion themes. It is the class I wait for with impatience! The teacher is a great guitar player named Jeffrey Richman. He plays often at the "Baked Potato", a very famous club in Los Angeles. He plays and records or had played and had recorded with great musicians as Ray Barretto, bass players Jimmy Haslip (from Yellowjackets) , Abe Laboriel, the pianists Russell Ferrante, T Lavitz, Peter Wolf, and with drummers as Vinny Colaiuta, Steve Smith and Simon Phillips...
Every friday, Jeff brings with him many wonderful arrangements!
4:00 p.m: "Jazz Drums" The teacher is an old drummer named Chuck Flores. He has played with Jao Giberto in the 1960's during the big Bossa Nova wave. He also played with Charlie Parker and Woody Herman! Same concept than PERC RSW and Rock Drums: there are 2 assistants who play with students.
I have also the "Live Playing Workshops". I go to the pianist Carl Schroeder's LPW. Carl is a great musician who writes for Chick Corea. Very good class too because each sudent is assisted by a teacher. Therefore, there are much as teachers as students in the workshop. And of course, I practice my instrument in a lab. I have 4 labmates, but our schedules are totally different and I can practice quite whenever I want.
Saturday and Sunday: days out! But school is open 24h and 7 days. I can practice during the week-end or not, I have the choice!...
