Ca y est, on est en Novembre. J'ai 2 amis de Toulouse qui sont venus me rendre visite. Eh oui, Olivier et Jean-Michel sont les premiers de mes amis que je vois ici! Olivier joue dans le groupe blues "Awek" (http://www.awekblues.com/) et Jean-Michel est en freelance et egalement professaur a l'ecole Dante Agostini a Toulouse. Ca fait drole d'entendre parler francais a la maison! Meme si je parle tous les jours francais au M.I. avec quelques etudiants ou J-Marc Belkadi...
On a ete entre autres aux Studios Universal. C'est vraiment fou! Pour ceux qui ont vu le dernier film de S. Spielberg "La Guerre des Mondes" avec Tom Cruise, ils reconnaitront la scene d'apres le crash de l'avion sur les photos. J'ai aussi vu la mythique maison d'Anthony Hopkins dans le film d'Alfred Hitchcock: "Psychose". Il y a aussi le fameux motel juste a cote de la maison... ca fait vraiment bizarre de voir ca en vrai... et surtout en couleur!... L'attraction "Water World" est vraiment incroyable egalement car on assiste meme a un crash d'hydravion en live!!!!
Nous avons ete dans des clubs et dans d'autres endroits aussi. On a vu des concerts vraiment bons. En bref, on a pris un grand bol d'air musical et culturel durant ces quelques jours! Puis, je suis aussi alle au Musee Getty a Los Angeles. (photo) http://www.getty.edu/
Le soir meme, on est sorti dans un club mythique qui s'appelle le "Derby". (photo) C'est un club ou on danse le swing. Ca a ete une drole d'impression! Un peu comme si on avait pris une machine a remonter le temps. Il y a un jazzband comme dans les annees 30. Supers musiciens et ambiance incroyable! On a vraiment ete impressionnes!Tout le monde dansait et se parlait. Un peu comme si on etait entre amis en fait. Incroyable!
Puis, le lundi soir, on est alle a Long Beach ecouter un groupe de Blues. On a rencontre le batteur du groupe: Stephen Hodges. C'est un batteur au son incroyable et au C.V impressionnant puisqu'il a travaille entre autre avec: tom waits, the smashing pumpkins, david lynch, the fabulous thunderbirds, james harman, John Hammond, bo diddley, elvis costello, rickie lee jones, chuck berry , big joe turner etc...
Puis le mardi soir, on a ete dans un vieux club de L.A, le "World Famous Blues" ou on joue leblues. Il y a eu un Jam toute la soiree avec des musiciens qui jouent le blues dans la plus pure tradition! La aussi, l'ambiance etait incroyable! A la fin, une vieille dame a commencea chanter le blues a capella, incroyable! Ca sentait meme un peu le cotton et la Louisiane!...
Mercredi midi, Eric Hatfield m'a inviter au Rotary Club de Culver City afin que je puisse faire ma 1ere presentation. Je me suis assez surpris en fait, ca s'est pas mal passe. Je pensais que j'aurais plus de mal vis a vis demon expression orale en anglais. J'ai parle pendant 1/2 heure de mon experience devant les personnes du club qui m'invite. J'ai prepare des photos de la Region Midi-Pyrenees, de Toulouse, de Montreal, du M.I. etc... et je les commente.
Et le soir, on a ete dans un tout petit club a la programmation etonnante nomme "La Ve Lee". (http://www.laveleejazzclub.com/) On a pu ecouter le quartet de Scott Kinsey (claviers), avec Steve Tavaglione (sax), Tim Hagans (trompette), Jimmy Earl (basse) et GARY NOVAK!!! (a la batterie). On s'est vraiment regales car on etait au bord a droite de la scene et on pouvait parfaitement voir son jeu. Gary a vraiment un jeu etonnant. Lors de sa venue au M.I. avec Robben Ford, il m'avait donne son contact. Il y avait aussi Larry Goldings dans l'assistance. C'est un hasard, mais ce tres grand pianiste/organiste est un ami de l'une des meilleures amies de ma colocataire! Larry venait d'enregistrer la veille plusieurs morceaux jazzy avec les Rolling Stones!!!... L.A est une ville vraiment folle!

We are in November! Two friends of mine from Toulouse came to visit me. Both are drummers. Olivier plays blues in the band called "Awek" (http://www.awekblues.com/) and Jean-Michel is a freelance musician and a drum teacher at the Dante Agostini's drum school inToulouse. While my friends are here, there is much French-speaking going on in the house. It is weird to hear it, even if I speak French every day at M.I. with some students or with the french guitar teacher J-Marc Belkadi...
We went to Universal Studios. (photos) It was amazing! I could see the famous scene of the plane crash in the last Steven Spielberg's movie "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise. Also, I saw the mythic Anthony Hopkins's house in Alfred Hitchcock's movie: "Psycho". The is the famous motel close to the house... it was so weird to see that in real... and in color!... "Water World" is incredible as well because we assisted at a live plane crash!

Also, we went to some clubs and others places. Some of the concerts we saw were very good. In general, these last few days have been very rich in music and culture.
And, I went to Getty museum in Los Angeles. (photo) http://www.getty.edu/ The same day, on the evening, we went to a famous club: the "Derby". (photo) We can dance the swing in this club. It was like if we went back to the past in a time machine. Amazing! There is a jazzband on stage, dressed like in the 30's. (photo) Very good musicians and very good atmosphere! We were really impressed because everybody was dancing and speaking to everybody. As if we were friends actually! Great!

Monday night, we went to Long Beach to see a blues band. We met Stephen Hodges who is the drummer of the band. Stephen is a drummer who sounds great! His C.V is unbeleivable because he has played and/or recorded with: Tom Waits, the Smashing Pumpkins, David Lynch, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, James Harman, John Hammond, Bo Diddley, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, Chuck Berry , Big Joe Turner etc...

Tuesday night, we went to an old blues's club in L.A, the "World Famous Blues". There was a big jam session with very good blues players! The atmosphere was inbeleivable too! At the end, an old black woman sang a blues song " a capella". Amazing!...

Wednesday, Eric Hatfeild invited me to the Rotary Club of Culver City, and I did my first presentation. I was surprised by myself actually. I tought I would have more difficulties expressing my ideas in English. I spoke about my experiences for about 1/2 hour for the members of the club. I showed them some photos of the Midi-Pyrenees Region, of Toulouse, of M.I. etc... and I commented on them. Benedikt, my host councelor was with me.

On the wednesay evening, we went to a tiny club called "La Ve Lee". (http://www.laveleejazzclub.com). We listened to the quartet of Scott Kinsey (keys), with Steve Tavaglione (sax), Tim Hagans (trumpet), Jimmy Earl (bass) et the wonderful GARY NOVAK!!! (drums). We were very close to Gary and we could see his playing very well. He is a very good drummer and his playing is incredible! When he came to the M.I. with the band of the guitar player Robben Ford, he gave me his contact.
There was Larry Goldings in the club too. Larry is a great pianist/organist and also a friend of my housemate's friend. And Larry had recorded few songs the day before with the Rolling Stones!!!... L.A is a fantastic city with fantastic people everywhere!
